Carter - Shirley Carter went home to be with the Lord on May 16, 2024, at the Life Care Center of Hilliard.  She was born on August 12, 1935, to the late Joe Brown Yawn and Lotice Beasley Yawn of Baxley, Georgia. Shirley attended Asbury Methodist Church in Baxley where she also played the piano.  Shirley and her late husband, Luther E. Carter moved to Jacksonville, Florida in the late 1950's before moving to Callahan in 1972. They resided there for 52 years. She was a charter member of First Assembly of God in Callahan, Florida where she played the piano over 15 years. In addition to her love for the piano, she was also an avid reader. She loved playing piano and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Shirley was a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister, and grandmother who will be dearly missed. She is preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Lotice Yawn; and husband, Luther E. Carter.

Shirley leaves behind her sons, Max (Susan) Carter, Melvin (Sheila) Carter; daughter, Lynette (Mike) Durden; brothers, Earl (Karen) Yawn and Gary (Louise) Yawn; 6 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Shirley's Life will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Crossroads Church with Pastor Jeul Strickland officiating.  Interment will follow at Jones Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Nassau Funeral Home.
