Obituary

Baldwin - Kathryn "Robbie" Baldwin, age 92, of Callahan, Florida passed away suddenly on October 23, 2023. She was born October 10, 1931, in Statesboro, Georgia. Her parents were Henry Grady and Clara Lou "Katie" Scott Cowart. She was one of a dozen children. She was married to Glennie Clifton Rowell for 24 years. Together they had 2 daughters, Diane and Donna. A yearly highlight for the family was a spectacular party that erupted during the Miss America Pageant! With everyone camped out in front of the television, pen and paper in hand, they tried to match the judges' picks; even Dad got in on it, recalled Donna - she thought because he was outnumbered with all the females in the house, he joined in! Kathryn could recall all the 1950's movie stars as well as their marriages, divorces and how old they were. She and her sister, Lula Mae, competed as to who knew the most details! Kathryn also once saved a neighbor's daughter, Mildred Panis, who was age 3 or 4. Her family lived in the same mobile home park. The fire occurred when someone doused a campfire, but it reignited, and as Mildred walked by she fell into the fire. Seeing this from her kitchen window, Kathryn rushed outside to rescue her. Kathryn was 27 at the time. She was a person who always helped when she could without thinking of herself first. The Panis family remained lifelong friends until Kathryn moved to Jacksonville, Florida. Diane went to school with Mildred and are still friends.

Kathryn abruptly became a widow at age 43. She had to learn how to drive and begin working. She was comfortable in doing what she already knew how to do and that was cleaning and maintaining hotel rooms for an income. She always kept a positive attitude and pushed forward to become independent. Even though at home she had a dryer, she would hang clothes on the line to dry and smell fresh. She always went the extra mile. Of course, laundry was one of her favorite things but not if her soap opera, "The Edge of Night" was on!

Kathryn's outfits had to always be 'matchy matchy'. She'd start planning what she was going to wear for Sunday the Thursday before! If her earrings or necklace or purse didn't match, she would paint them. Gold spray paint was one of her favorites! She painted shoes, flowers, dishes, chairs, and anything she decided to be gold! She even painted a real cactus once! Then, she fell in love with silver spray paint, but that's another story! Kathryn was an avid Georgia Bulldogs fan and always cheered for her favorite team. She was very patriotic and loved those festive holidays that gave her a chance to wear her coordinated red, white, and blue, or a Georgia Bulldogs ensemble.

Kathryn remarried. She and Willis Baldwin have been married 48 years. Together they have been a good team. They've entertained friends and family on many occasions. Robbie, as she was known to her Florida family, and Kathryn to her Georgia family. She was a true treasure and will be forever in our hearts and minds. Even now, you can still picture her smiling as you enter her front door. She was dearly loved, cherished, and had a way of drawing you in. Her special sitting place was on the end of the sofa and doing her word search or writing a letter with her faithful little dog Mason, by her side. Without her, the stars have now become dim.

Kathryn is preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Glennie Clifton Rowell; five brothers, Melvin, Eugene, Basil, Claude, H.G.; five sisters, Lula Mae Pevey, Juanita Allen, Lottie Hutchinson, Maitie Connell, Ruby Glisson; and a grandson-in-law, Scott Manning.

Kathryn leaves behind her loving husband, Willis Baldwin; two devoted daughters, Diane Lanter of Waycross, GA., Donna (John) Lane of Brunswick, GA.; a son, Dale Baldwin of Callahan, FL.; six grandchildren, Jackson "Jay" O'Quinn of White Oak, GA., Jackie Manning of Crandall, GA., Shanna Lindsay of Brunswick, GA., Johnny (Sarah) Lane of Brunswick, GA., Christy (Marrell) Cercy of Jacksonville, FL., Melissa Cabal of Callahan, FL.; fourteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Billy Cowart; and a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives.
