Perrin Neal
Farrar
Apr 2, 1930 — Oct 4, 2022
Farrar -Perrin Neal Farrar, age 92, of Hilliard, Florida, passed away on October 4, 2022. He was born on April 2, 1930, in Valley Park, Missouri to Jesse and Helen (Stout) Farrar and grew up in the outskirts of St. Louis. The Farrar line extends back to William Farrar, who emigrated from England to the Jamestown Colony in 1618.
Rather than waiting to be drafted during the Korean War, Perrin volunteered for the Naval Air Reserve October 16, 1950, and then enlisted in the regular Navy January 2, 1951, serving until November 15, 1954. Most of his military service was as a cook on the USS Robinson, DD-562, a Fletcher class destroyer. Perrin traveled the globe and was in Korean waters near the end of the Korean War. The USS Robinson crossed the international dateline in July 1953 and the equator in December 1953. While assigned to the USS Robinson and stationed at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Perrin met the love of his life, Kathryn Kocher. They married on February 14, 1953, and later were blessed with four children; Perry, Diane, Ronald, and Janet. Sadly, Kathryn passed away January 1986 in Callahan, Florida after her fiercely fought battle with cancer.
After separating from the Navy, Perrin became a meat cutter with the Food Fair/Pantry Pride grocery store chain in southeast Pennsylvania while he and Kathryn raised their family in Malvern. After the grocery store chain went bankrupt in 1978, Perrin, Kathryn, her brother, Donald and his wife, Mary bought what was then the Quality Inn motel in Callahan, Florida. In 1988, Perrin became sole proprietor of the motel, which he operated with help from his son, Ronald and daughter, Janet. The motel later changed to the Friendship Inn and Ship Inn, as it is known today. In 2002, Perrin sold the motel and moved to Hilliard, Florida. Perrin lived a full life sharing many memories with family. Some of those memories include traveling to Alaska with Perry and Nancy in 2009 where they stepped across the Arctic Circle. Perrin's 90th birthday in 2020 was during the early days of the pandemic and the local first responders surprised him with their sirens, a parade, and a cake. Believe it or not he was also a retired Chippendale dancer!
Perrin is survived by his children, Perry (Nancy) Farrar of Maryland; Diane (David) DeGezelle of Pennsylvania; Ronald (Melissa) Farrar of Callahan, FL; Janet (Ricky) Plummer of Callahan, FL. In addition to his children, the beloved Pop Pop is survived by nine grandchildren, Dawn, Gwenn, Timothy, Amber, Matthew, Hannah, Jackson, Scarlett and Ashlee; 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. His family would like to express their gratitude to his long-term caregiver, Debbie Lindsay.
A Memorial Service for Perrin will be held at Jacksonville National Cemetery and will take place at a later date. The arrangements are under the care and direction of Nassau Funeral Home, 541720 US-1, Callahan, Florida 32011, 904-879-1770. Visit www.nassaufh.com to sign the family's guest book.
