Obituary

Hamlin -John Doss Hamlin, Jr., born on July 20,1948, in Quincy, Florida to John Doss Hamlin, Sr. and Claudine Kimbrell, drew his final breath in the presence of his two devoted sons the morning of August 1, 2025. After a long and courageous battle, his body succumbed to cancer. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents and his devoted wife, Janice.

Johnny grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1966. He was drafted out of high school to the United States Army and spent most of that time in Germany as he worked his way up to sergeant.

In 1969, Johnny met Janice and a year later they married. They built their home, their life and their love for family, friends, sports and outdoors on Janice Drive in Callahan, Florida. They raised two sons, Kyle and Darin, spending most Saturdays at a ball field or fishing.

A proud Gator Booster for 49 years, Johnny was a lifelong Florida Gators fan who especially enjoyed tailgating during football season.

Johnny lived a life not marked by grand titles or worldly acclaim, but by the deep and lasting impact he had on those who knew him. His greatest accolades were not found on plaques or headlines – they were found in laughter shared across a table, in boisterous rooting and high-fiving in his garage tailgating parties, in his unwavering presence when it mattered most.

To his family and friends, Johnny was a constant source of warmth and humor. He believed in showing up – with a story, a helping hand or just a listening ear. He made people feel seen, heard and cherished.

Johnny found joy in the little things such as a good drink, a well-timed joke, a puzzle, hummingbirds, gardening, dancing, fishing. To his grandchildren, he was simply "Poppy" – a name filled with affection and memories. Whether he was cheering them on from the sidelines, sneaking them treats or telling stories in his signature style, he filled their lives with love, laughter, and warmth.

Everyone liked Johnny. Those who knew him will remember not just what he said, but how he made them feel.

Johnny is survived by his sons, John Kyle Hamlin (Anne Marie) and Michael Darin Hamlin (Tonia Christine); his cherished grandchildren, Rhett Michael, Kyla Serrell, Olivia Dettore and Reece Christian; and many dear friends, all of whom he loved deeply.

The tribute above was prepared by Johnny's loving daughter in law, Anne Marie Hamlin.

There will be a Graveside Memorial Service to honor the life of Johnny Hamlin on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Jacksonville National Cemetery where military honors will be rendered. The family requests that all attendees wear their Florida Gator attire. Family and friends are welcome to join in a celebration of his life immediately after the service at his home.  In lieu of flowers, and in true Johnny Hamlin fashion, please raise a glass, share a laugh, and make a toast to Johnny – and the Florida Gators. Go Gators! The arrangements are under the care and direction of Nassau Funeral Home, 541720 US-1, Callahan, Florida 32011, 904-879-1770. Visit www.nassaufh.com to sign the family's guest book.
