Obituary

Wine - Dana E. Wine, age 91, of Hilliard, Florida passed away July 10, 2024. He was born on July 28, 1932, in Orlando, West Virginia. Dana was one of 12 children born to Ernest and Frena Heath Wine. He was one of the kindest people to all and a true gentleman. Dana loved his country and showed it with his continued service throughout his lifetime. He left a mark on all those whose paths he crossed. Dana's generosity and care for others was unwavering. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, for four years, during the Korean conflict. During his time in the service, he met his future wife Shirley, in Biloxi, Mississippi. They moved to Hilliard, Florida in 1965. Dana and Shirley made a great pair in serving for the VFW and AMVETS for many years. Mr. Jack Howarter and Dana, both were instrumental in the fundraising efforts on behalf of the Nassau County AMVETS (and the National AMVETS) to have the 40' Carillon Bell Tower placed and erected at the Jacksonville National Cemetery. The dedication of the tower was held in March 2014. Dana and Shirley also made time to travel, as both enjoyed it. They somehow managed to visit 47 of the 50 states. Quite an accomplishment! When Shirley's health began to fail, Dana stood by her side and cared for her until her passing. The two shared 64 wonderful years together, before her passing in 2017. Dana was quite an overachiever at heart but handled it all with humility. He was a member of the Slidell, Louisiana, Volunteer Police Department; the Hilliard Volunteer Fire Department; worked as an EMT; a Lifetime member of the VFW and AMVETS; National Rifle Association and American Legion. Dana also served on the Nassau County Hospital Board. He is a retired Air Traffic Controller from the FAA in Hilliard, Florida. Dana had a pilot's license and loved to fly! Following retirement, Dana continued his education at Jones College to achieve his 4-year bachelor's degree in business management. From there he sold real estate for Dan Jones; and taught Adult Basic Education at FJC and in Hilliard. Dana somehow also had time for fun, that included cookouts and oyster roasts, which he loved to share with family and friends. He loved to deer hunt and fish when he got the chance. Dana's 'therapy' was gardening, and of course, he was excellent at it! He was a wonderful person, and his soft smile and sweet conversation will be missed by all who had the honor to know him. Dana is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; and his son, Dana Wine, II.

Dana is survived by his children, Sheila (Randy) McMillan of Jacksonville, FL and Earnie (Beth) Wine of Hilliard, FL; granddaughter, Kelly (George) Antonio of Jacksonville, FL; and great-grandson, Callan Antonio.

The tribute was prepared by Dana's loving family.
