Obituary

Brett Eugene Mehlhoff of Callahan, FL passed away on July 5, 2019 at the age of 71. His sudden passing was caused by massive cardiac arrest. His closest family members were with their husband and father on this day.

Brett was born October 20, 1947 in North Dakota, to late parents Emmy and Dellas Mehlhoff. Although born dangerously premature for the time, he was not slowed down, played sports and talked about running the fastest mile in school. Brett married Carole Paulson on August 21, 1976 and began to grow their family starting the following year. He was a successful employee in the logistics industry, working for various railroads and steamship lines, moving his family across the country with each new opportunity.  In 1988, the family settled in Atlantic Beach, FL, Brett working for CSX. He retired in 1995 to forge a new path and became a respected entrepreneur in the same industry. In 2015, by now an empty-nester & beloved grandparent, he left the office life permanently to pursue a retirement dream of building and maintaining a small farm with Carole in Callahan. There they learned together to raise goats and chickens, tend to gardens and orchards. Brett then happily spent most time working with his hands, on the land or tinkering in his workshop. Brett loved to experiment with cooking and barbecuing. The farm was home base for most of the family's holiday meals, sleepovers with grandchildren and any other reason to come together. Brett had many friends from various and all of his life's journeys, taking so many under his wing when they needed him. This generosity, hard work & humility was paramount in defining his character, and it is the legacy he has left for those of us remembering him today.

Brett is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carole; daughters Lisa Mehlhoff, Mackenzie Marchy and Amanda (Tim) Toman, and son Jeff (Brittni) Mehlhoff; grandchildren Jaxon Baker, Braden Baker, Coleson Marchy, Harper Marchy, Arlo Toman & Hayes Mehlhoff; brothers Donovan & Craig; sister Marilyn, many other extended family members and friends; including animals, plants and acres of land that have been loved and cared for by him like family.

A private service will be held at a later date.
