Obituary

Betty Mae Norris, of Callahan, Florida, went home to be with the LORD on Monday, December 6, 2021, at the age of 93. She was born in Covington, Oklahoma to Jay and Ambie (Page) Congdon on July 5,1928. Betty was raised in the farming community of Marshall, Oklahoma by her parents, along with an older brother and two younger sisters. Early in childhood, Betty began developing a lifelong love of pencil and charcoal sketching, progressing over time to pastel chalk then oil painting. Her eye for detail resulted in a number of beautiful (some commissioned) works that she lovingly gave away to family and friends. Betty was blessed with an abundance of creativity. In addition to painting, she was an expert seamstress of clothing, fabric dolls and doll clothes. She also enjoyed quilting and always had a beautiful flower garden. In the kitchen, her claim to fame was Cherry Pie and homemade ice cream!

After graduation from Marshall High School, Betty worked as a telephone operator. She married Robert L. (Bob) Norris on June 4,1949. Across 56 years of marriage, they raised one son, Tommy, and one daughter, Connie, predominantly in Enid, Oklahoma and Oklahoma City. Through the years, they enjoyed many family camping and fishing trips with Betty's parents and traveling to large family reunions in the summer. They often enjoyed visiting Robert's parents and extended family at their farm.

Betty was a loving wife, mother and devoted caregiver who loved being with her family more than anything. Though often short on means, there was always an abundance of love and she managed to make every event fun and special. Betty was a kid at heart, with a playful sense of adventure. On camping/fishing trips, she loved to go exploring, leading her children on hikes along the shoreline or through the woods, across streams, making every journey an adventure.

After Robert retired, they fulfilled their dream of lakeside living, making their home on Pine Creek Lake, in Oklahoma. They lived there for 16 years, developing enduring friendships with church members and neighbors. Their door was always open with the welcome mat extended for family and friends who were always greeted with a big hug.

In 2002, Bob and Betty moved to Florida to be near their daughter. Kings Road Fellowship became their new church family. They loved going to fellowship and loved their "peeps" dearly, appreciating their beautiful music and prayer support. After Robert passed away in 2005, Betty continued living in her house for 14 years. Her family grew with the addition of three great-grandchildren, the youngest affectionately dubbing her GooGoo.

In 2019, she moved to assisted living at Lakes Crossing Senior Care in Kingsland, Georgia where she lived for two years. Betty was well loved and cared for, becoming known as "Grandma" by her affectionate caregivers.

Betty is survived by her son, Thomas D. Norris of Claremont, NH; daughter, Connie M. Nicholas and husband, David of Callahan, FL; two granddaughters; Tina M. Sabo and husband, Dave (aka Snake) of Massapequa, NY; Amber M. Bovinette and husband, John of Callahan, FL; three great-grandchildren, Ava Tucciarone and Drezden Tucciarone both of Massapequa, NY; Eliana Bovinette of Callahan, FL; brother, Harold R.
