Alex G.
Middleton
Dec 27, 1933 — Mar 27, 2022
Middleton - Alexander G. Middleton, Sr., 88 years old, passed at home on March 27, 2022, with his wife of 65 years, Vonnie Middleton, at his side. Alex was born in Hinesville, Georgia, to Bertha Nimerfroh (Taylor) and Marshall Middleton. He grew up in Georgia along with six siblings—Lola Collins, Lourise Oldham, Loretta Terney, Irene Nimerfroh, Ellic Middleton, and John Charles Middleton—until he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he remained active duty for 27 years. Retiring as a Master Gunnery Sergeant, he was honorably discharged from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina after multiple tours in Vietnam, and Korea. He then went on to work for and retire from Ryder after 20 years and served as a Deacon at River Road Baptist Church for 22 years. Alex reached Grand Master Mason in the Masonic Fraternity, where he formed strong bonds that remained throughout his life. During his time at River Road Baptist Church, he visited church members and their families at their homes, hospitals, and death beds as a calm, caring presence.
Alex and Vonnie have five children, Alex G. Middleton, Jr. (Sherry), Cindy Martin, Mark Middleton (Amy), Michael Middleton (Tammy), and Elizabeth Middleton; 8 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. Alex remained a proud Marine until his death, and a United States flag and Marine Corps flag still flies at his and Vonnie's home. He always gave so much of himself to others and was a light in the darkness for everyone who had the privilege of meeting him. With all his accomplishments, he felt his greatest one was being a husband, father, and grandfather. He was forever anoptimist and the rock that held his family together. His loss will be felt by all those who have been touched by his loving spirit.
A Celebration of Alex's Life will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at 11:30 a.m. at New Life Baptist Church, Wheeler Street St. George, Georgia with Pastor James Conner and Pastor Hal McIntosh officiating. Interment will follow at River Road Baptist Church Cemetery, 21067 County Road 121, Hilliard, Florida 32046 where military honors will be rendered. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at New Life Baptist Church.
